Absolute beginners - for students who have no previous knowledge of the language. The objective of level 1 course is to enable beginners to communicate in Mandarin with the most essential and fundamental vocabulary and expressions. While teaching some basic Chinese characters, the course focuses on speaking skills, thus using pinyin most of the time in the teaching and learning process, unless there are particular demand from learners or clients for Chinese characters teaching. The course integrates the communicative functions with essential grammatical structures. Learners are expected to master the most essential conversational sentences which are divided into situational topics, including greetings, asking for directions, shopping, making an appointment, changing money, etc. The exercises are designed to reinforce the use of the vocabulary and expressions in each topic. Another important part of the course is introduction to the Chinese culture and traditions. This part may include topics arranging from Chinese table manners to Chinese business culture. Topics may vary to suit learners' different needs.
