GUIDE TO LANGUAGE LEVELS in KOREAN
The Korean language is an interesting one. Nowadays, it is one of the most in-demand languages that most young students are willing to learn mainly due to the global popularity of K-pop. But aside from this, more people also see promising opportunities in Korea’s thriving economy, and international political will.
Whatever your reason might be, you first have to familiarize yourself with the corresponding levels of aptitude as designed by TOPIK or Test Proficiency in Korean. The test measures your ability to read, write and understand the language, and categorizes you according to three levels: Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced.
Let’s tackle each level to give you a more comprehensive understanding on how to learn the Korean language.
Beginner
For the Beginner phase, the TOPIK test is focused on levels one and two. These levels are confined to the study of reading and writing, with level one focusing on the use of typical commands of Korean. These include phrases you could use to greet people, buy or order goods, as well as how you can convey common sentences in casual conversations with the use of at least 800 basic words.
Level two requires you to learn from 1,500 to 2,000 words to be used in either situational conversations. By this level, you should be able to determine whether discussions apply to formal situations or otherwise.

Experience Korean culture to the fullest by becoming fluent in Korean!
Intermediate
This phase comprises another two levels. Level three measures your aptitude in dealing with transactional and social discussions in public. This requires your ability to comprehend and utilize the proper use of words and grammar, while having a fair grasp of basic Korean language characteristics.
By level four, you should be able to understand and engage in conversations with ease regarding a wider range of topics such as news stories and social issues. You should also be able to understand certain idioms and how they are used in context during discussions about Korean social and cultural topics.
Advanced
Level five learners are expected to be more fluent and efficient in dealing with professional aspects like research work and technical reporting. By this stage of learning, you should already be able to engage in less frequently discussed topics such as economics, politics, and the like. You are also able to use phrases of expressions in both your writing and reading that fit in formal and informal situations.
The last level of learning classifies you as highly fluent with the use of the language. By this, you must be able to utilize correct sentence structures and terminologies at work regardless of any situation, and comprehend discussions on various topics without any struggle. When you reach level six, you are already considered fluent though not to the degree of native speakers.
Each phase of the TOPIK tests is graded out of 100 points. Beginners may aim for a possible total of 200 points; 300 for Intermediate learners; and 300 for Advanced. The test comprises composition workshops to measure your aptitude, listening exercises, and multiple choice exams.
